Analysis of an Argument

An Argument essay section is officially termed as Analysis of an Argument. Analysis of an Argument is the second task on the GMAT AWA which tests your ability to find flaws in apparently logical arguments. This task is actually easier than the issue analysis. With a little training and practice, you will get basic familiarity with the terms of logic that you can successfully identify the premises and assumptions on which a conclusion rests. In Analysis of an Argument, the mark you obtain is directly linked to the number of problems that you identify in the logic and sensible suggestions you make to evaluate the conclusion.

 Format and Directions of Argument Analysis

In GMAT Argument writing task, there is 1 essay question or prompt. Both the first or second timed GMAT section and the Time Limit is 30 minutes.

In Testing format, You will use the built-in word processor to compose an essay response to an Issue statement but the test does not allow you to choose your topic from a list.

In the test, your skills are tested in which first they evaluate your ability to identify important features of an argument and to analyze and critique the argument in an insightful and well-reasoned manner. Secondly, they tested your control of the English language i.e. word choice and usage and the conventions of standard written English i.e. grammar and sentence structure.

Structure of GMAT Argument -Analysis Prompt

A structure of GMAT Argument prompt consists of two main components:

  • A quoted argument from a fictitious source.
  • directive or instructions for responding to the stated argument.

In first part, the source might be a sales brochure, business memorandum, or political speech, to list just a few possibilities. The prompt might also indicate the source of the argument.

In second part, a directive or instruction for responding to the stated argument. The directive is the same for each and every prompt in the official pool.
